Interesting idea - a worldwide class divide caused by the advent of photosynthetic hair. It's good that no time is wasted on pseudo-tech details and that the story is character - driven. Some of the rich people are memorably despicable. Nice.

Some original ideas and moments of extremely good writing, but eccessively self-indulgent. The thread that connects the stories is at times barely visible. The book is trying to be too clever and that put me off. It really needs to be re-read, but I'm not sure I can be bothered.

Interesting, wacky story. A bit too clever at times.

Not my cup of tea. It's interesting that a Japanese writes a story from the point of view of a Portuguese missionary, but there isn't much of a story. God, perhaps predictably, is silent throughout. Hence the title. At least the priest gets himself a second-hand wife at the end.

I read it immediately after finishing the Grapes of wrath, so it never really had a chance. Not bad though, gripping, with a good starting idea. Basically like 'Memento' with a longer memory span and no dead wife. And no body writing. And no male protagonist. In fact, it has very little in common wi ... (continue)

At times irritating and depressing (or both), but always entertaining, an extremely well-written, multi-voiced novel.

Every Contact Leaves A Trace
A superior whodunnit, beatifully observed and elegantly constructed. I can only describe the writing as 'careful'. Not sure it makes sense. Highly recommended anyway.
